Join us for a unique opportunity to examine the craft and practice of writing at Luther College. If you are interested in creative writing, English, journalism or writing for media, this is a great way to experience firsthand all that Luther has to offer.

9:00 a.m.  Optional Campus Tour
10:00 a.m Welcome and Introduction to the department
10:30 a.m. Chapel or conversation with English faculty and majors
11:00 a.m. Session I: Choose from class visits, workshops, and seminars in creative writing or literature.
12:15 p.m. Lunch with current English majors, students in creative writing, or members of the Chips staff (Luther's weekly newspaper)
1:30 p.m. Session II: Choose from class visits, workshops, and seminars in creative writing or literature.
2:45 p.m. Session III: Choose from class visits, workshops, and seminars in creative writing or literature.
4:00 p.m. Opening reading of the 2013 Luther College Writers Festival with Mark Salzman (award-winning novelist and nonfiction author).
5:00 p.m. Book Signing by Mark Salzman
8:00 p.m. Poetry Slam hosted by Art Haus in Downtown Decorah. No fee required for Writer Visit Day participants.

A special opportunity: You are invited to submit an original piece for workshop discussion. Indicate on the registration form below if you intend to do this and more information will be sent to you.

Friday evening and Saturday provide additional opportunities for visiting students and their parents.

  • The Friday 4:00 Lecture is the kick-off event for the Luther Writer's Festival that takes place on Friday evening and Saturday. The Festival requires a separate registration. Check out the activities and fee structure at https://www.luther.edu/writersfestival/
  • Saturday, September 28 is also an Admissions Preview Day. This is a chance to broaden your look at Luther. You can register for that event by clicking here.

Seniors who are visiting for the Writers Visit Day and want to stay overnight on Friday with a current Luther Student, in order to participate in Saturday activities, can make that request on this registration form.
